Most parents are fascinated with their babies. Who could blame them? Babies just give the most innocent smiles and the most genuine emotions imaginable. Good news for you, as a photographer! This is a business opportunity! Even if you aren’t promoting baby or toddler photography services, parents may just come to you to have their baby photographed. The following are a few tips to help you maximize the opportunity should it occur:
1. Stoop down to the baby’s level.
Literally. Really, we are serious about this because doing so would really give the baby a chance to play around and be inquisitive toward you, the cameras lens and the whole process. This inquisitiveness often gives you the chance to capture a baby’s curious expression. Nothing yet is said to be at par with a babys’ expression.
2. Be sure to have ‘bait’.
Well, you have to take into consideration that naturally, babies are inquisitive and they just won’t stay in their places for more than a minute. They are really designed to explore the world around them, familiarizing themselves with it. So be sure that you have something that is enough to catch their attention even for a little while. However, this should not be food that could end up putting grime on the babys’ face. Unless of course this is what the parents want, it is still cute to see a baby with icing or frosting all over their face.
3. Use high speed shutter speed with large apertures.
Because of the baby’s playful nature, some of the best moments that you would want to catch on film may just come spontaneously, without much warning. So always be ready to press that button and take the picture. Also, try to set your camera so that it could take a lot of pictures every second (motor-drive mode). This way, you have greater chances of catching some otherwise missed expressions.
4. Always try to make a connection with your subject.
bear in mind that you are trying to catch something that is truly representative of the baby (unique). The baby may provide a lot of these things but they will only take place if the baby feels secure or comfortable with you chasing them around with your odd gadget.
So, before the session starts, allow baby to become your audience and enteratin a little. baby will come to expect things from you and not be scared. Try playing with them a little so they at least learn to trust you and believe that you are a friend and not someone who sneaked past security.
5. Have the parents nearby.
Although, this is not really something to worry about, we feel that it’s still important. The parents are perhaps the ones the baby trusts the most. Try to have them nearby so that the baby will be more at ease to play provide those moments that you want to catch. Having the parents nearby could also be an instant remedy when baby starts to become tired. The parents are understandably the instant pressure savours.
