To narrow down the field, I looked at several pages of results and noted the blogs that were mentioned multiple times in different articles, and then did quite a bit of browsing on each of those blogs.  Here are some (other) great photography blogs that are worth taking a look at, in no particular order:

This blog has lots of great tips and also features photographers and their work and tells how they went about getting the shots. Additionally, contests, news, interviews, and tutorials keep the site interesting.

3. The Imaging Buffet     http://imagingbuffet.com/

Gear reviews, imaging news, podcasts, newsletter, tips and resources, along with interviews and digital photography tips.  It also has a good list of books and workshops that may be of interest to those with photography in the blood.

4. Photoinduced   http://www.photoinduced.com/

Photoinduced has lots of photography galleries, a good listing of events, lots of photography news, product reviews, and weekly giveaways of great photography accessories.  This blog also has links to photography books, galleries and museums, news sites, stock photo sites, blogs, education for photographers, contests and competitions.

5. Shutter Sisters   http://shuttersisters.com/

Shutter Sisters is filled to the rim with extraordinary photographs of ordinary things, taken by women behind the lenses.  With their monthly “One sweet shot” contest, they believe in showcasing the varied talent and experience levels of their blog’s subscribers. They also have “Picture Hope” and also the “One word Project” which attempts to capture that one word in a photo. This month the word is “nurture.”

6. Camera Dojo   http://cameradojo.com/

Weekly podcasts with photography experts spice things up on Camera Dojo. There is also news, reviews of products, tutorials on cool stuff like Lightroom and Photoshop, and all sorts of lighting and shooting techniques and tips, and all sorts of cool Camera Dojo tools to take a look at.

7. Endless Years     http://endlessyears.com/

Endless Years reviews cameras, photography gadgets, and video equipment—geared specifically to baby boomers and their families. Things are explained in laymen’s terms, and the very latest in new gadgets and equipment are discussed, along with the pros and cons of each new product.

The point of this blog is to help each other as a community. If you’ve learned something—action, information, or experience that could help other photographers, the site asks you to post it and share it. It has a lot of helpful resources, like interviews and tips, as well as sources for freebies.

This blog teaches you all about making money from microstock photography.  It gives you the nitty gritty on all the microstock sites, including information on affiliate programs  and which photos to take that will bring in some commission revenue for you.

10. Fotohacker    http://www.fotohacker.com/

Fotohacker is written by digital photography geeks that you can trust to tell you how to make your digital images better. They know all the cool things you can do with the camera, with the gear, and with the software.  They offer lots of interesting resources, tips, and techniques that will have you producing better quality photos right away.

This list, obviously, is by no means official or complete. There are literally thousands of photography blogs in cyberspace. The key is to find one which addresses the types of photography that you do, and is on your level.  Too simple and you won’t learn from it. Likewise, if it’s too difficult, it will be hard for you to understand. Aim for that perfect middle ground, and shoot!

Summer camera care

Summertime generally means days of brilliant sun, time spent outdoors and in the water and lots of activity that isn’t as easily done during the colder and snowier months. If someone is a photographer, the summer months also mean exposing a camera to its greatest enemies – humidity, water, heat and overexposure to the sun.

Modern digital cameras are far more sturdy and durable than earlier models, but they are still easily damaged by exposure to the elements and even strong knocks or blows. This means that in addition to performing regular camera maintenance, the summer months mean paying attention to the surroundings in which the camera is used.

Let’s begin with water – the beach, lake, pool or ocean will all easily and quickly kill a digital camera. Even prolonged exposure to excessive humidity will have some effects on a camera’s performance as well. This means that any time you risk a camera coming into direct contact with water (such as a day of boating, some time spent “tubing” down a river, or even when lounging by the pool) it might be a good idea to use a waterproof bag or housing meant specifically for those taking underwater imagery.

The Internet is a great place to find retailers of such bags, but there are also places that show you “hack” methods of building your own. Either way, it is best to give the product a “test run” before you use your camera inside of it. This sort of case can also prevent grit and sand from making their way into the camera as well, but they cannot save the camera from sun and heat damage.

This is the reason that summer camera care will also include the use of a waterproof equipment bag as well. Even though it might be more fashionable and convenient to tote your digital camera by its wrist strap, you can easily drop it and do serious harm. You can also allow sand or other materials inside of the housing, which will eventually destroy the working parts of the camera.

Any digital camera retailer will also usually offer high-end and fashion friendly cases that are padded and waterproof and can serve as a primary defense against the worst summertime camera problems. Of course, you will eventually use the camera and this means you will be exposing it to the final issue that harms a camera – overexposure to the sun.

Digital cameras take photographs via the sensor device, and if this pointed for too long a period of time into direct sunlight it can destroy or harm the sensor device. It can also damage the eye, so the best thing to do is limit the number of times the camera is aimed at the sun during any summer day of photography.

Create online photo gallery

As a photographer, one of the keys to success is taking full and complete advantage of good resources (including galleries) for photographers.  Tools and resources are those nuggets that make the life of a photographer just that bit easier.  Sometimes you have to search extensively for the tools that will help you.  It is most often the case that you will find a good tool here, another great gadget there and so on.  Good resources are often fragmented and provided by different organizations.  It is very rare to find many quality photography resources all in the same place.

With the continued development of the Internet as a major resource, web sites can now offer photographers some excellent digital tools and resources.  Not only can web sites provide a way for photographers to display their portfolio online, they can also provide a myriad of other digital resources and technical services. This provides a channel for photographers to reach and interact with potential clients anywhere in the world.

For quite some time now, there have been web sites that allow photographers to create and display an online portfolio of their work.  These online portfolios usually allow photographers to create galleries of their photos and in many cases, to separate their work into catalogs or themes.  These web sites are extremely useful and can be the key to success for many photographers.  These days, every photographer should ideally have some form of online gallery or portfolio.  After all, this is one of the main ways that photographers get exposure and new work.

The Internet is made up of a variety of challenging and fast-changing technologies.  Photographers can benefit greatly from this because it also means that each year we see more and more online technologies developed for photographers.  Web sites aimed at bringing resources to photographers have moved forward a lot in the past few years.  More sites are coming to the forefront that offer photographers a variety of great resources all under ‘one roof’, so to speak.

Like other web site owners, photography resource site owners seem to now recognize that photographers have a need for more than just the ability to display their stunning photography.  Every time an image is posted to the Internet it can potentially be copied by the unscrupulous and then re-used for all kinds of purposes.  This can put your very business as well as your potential income at risk.  Photographers need methods and digital resources to protect their work from unauthorized access, copying, re-use and distribution.  Perhaps you only want potential clients to view your work but not to make it available to the general public?  There are now web sites that allow you this level of control.

When you place a gallery of your work online, you often do so for commercial reasons; you are interested in catching the attention of potential clients and in actually selling pieces of your work.  Some web sites have caught on to this need and offer photographers online galleries to display their work with tools and facilities to sell their images online as well.  They often provide accounts that have shopping cart facilities.  The photographer would then usually need to set up their own merchant account to accept credit cards or at minimum own a PayPal account where they can receive funds.  Photographers can save a lot of money by using a web site like this rather than paying huge sums of money to re-invent the wheel.

When you begin to look for a good web site that can provide you with good photography resources, there are a few things to consider.  Although you want a gallery to display your photographs and your work, it is always important to do a little research upfront.  It could save you a lot of trouble later on.  Look for a well-established web site with a proven track record.  Ask other friends that are photographers for advice on web sites they have used or know to be of good quality.  In addition to all of this, you should try to find a web site that will allow you to offer a quality presentation of your work without frequent technical glitches or error messages.  Remember, potential clients will judge your work and the gallery that presents it as a reflection of you and your company values.

1. Important: Try and find a service which provides a free trial and make sure they have multi level services all in the same place ie.  features like including uploading full size photos, printing and selling; and will pay you per user.
2. Ensure there’s enough storage – half 1gb storage at least for every year plus everything needed to upload, organize and present photos.
3. See if it includes unlimited storage in real terms (or at least a reasonable amount) to all the features in their plan.

Me, my money is on this gallery. That doesn’t mean I’ve got shares in it (I wish I did)… it means I think it’s the best available gallery right now. They also have a free trial and all those other points I mentioned above.

Include a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page on your website. This is an excellent way to anticipate what your potential customers will want to know. Obviously you are the one to come up with the questions and answers, and you can add facts that do not fit anywhere else on your website.

Things you can include in this section are:

• tips for location shots
• tips for taking portraits
• provide answers to the questions you are commonly asked
• tips for wedding photos

This is an excellent way to engage your readers in a consultative way. It also makes you look professional and encourage peoples to contact you.

Sell your Photography

Too many photographers are scared to sell their photos. It may just be they do not know how to sell their work, but many seem to feel that selling their work is negative thing. Something you need to keep in mind is that you are offering a fair and valuable service to your clients and deserve to be paid for the service.

Make sure your website lets your visitors know all about your services. Extol the value of what you photography business offers and make sure you update your website regularly with special offers. Also, regularly update your photo galleries with your latest photos for all to see. Your work is the best way to sell yourself.

Your website should be a true reflection of your business. Make sure that everything you say on your photography website you live up to. If you make claims on your website make sure you can live up to them because, if you don’t and your client has chosen you as their photographer based on these claims, you will earn a bad reputation very quickly.

Don’t think that having a website will magically materialize clients or sales for you. You still need to work hard at earning your clients’ trust and interest. Let your potential clients know what makes you so special. What makes you stand out from other photography businesses.

Your website is an advertisement for you. Maximize its potential to reach prospective clients. Think about the message you want to send. Who are your typical clients?

Lenses project a circular image back into a digital camera’s sensor, which is able to capture or record a rectangular portion of the total image in the lens. The way to envision the operation of the lens is to think of them as long tubes held to the eye the shorter the tube the more of the overall scene is revealed, the longer the tube the more specific the amount of the scene. This is how lenses operate.

For example, a 100mm lens brings two times the magnification of the standard 50 mm view, meaning that less of the scene is registered in the lens or camera sensor. A basic rule of thumb for understanding the function of a lens is to remember the lower the mm numbers the larger amount of a scene is viewable in the lens. The larger the mm number the more magnified the original scene, and less of it viewable through the lens.

With that being said, digital lenses work in much the same manner as traditional film camera lenses. The 50mm lens delivers the same field of view as the human eye, including some measure of peripheral view. smaller lenses are considered wide angle for this reason, capturing more than the human eye measures. These are relied on for landscape photographs or those with broad perspectives.

The 70-300mm lenses deliver a longer focal length, narrowing the field of view and presenting smaller amounts of a scene. Such lenses magnify a portion of the view, bringing it in closer to the lens and filling the frame. These are sold as zoom lenses and some offer macrocapability, meaning they will focus clearly and deeply on tiny objects such as flowers or drops of water, and at speeds that will allow the images to be enlarged without disruption or digital noise.

If someone wanted to take a photo of a bird on a wire they would need a longer focal range because the bird is likely to fly away if someone tries to approach it. The photographer would want to use a higher number lens, but may also want to investigate a zoom or even macro lens. This delivers a close focal point at a long distance, but eliminates many of the issues of digital photography such as pixilation and noise during enlargement.

An investment in a few good digital lenses makes sense for even an amateur photographer as they allow a great deal of experimentation and will always produce excellent results.

Building a photography website is fun – plan it out before you start. Then take a look online for a company with free web building software when you sign up to their web services. It does not need to be expensive. And you will probably find yourself hooked. If it is all too much for you to do yourself then there are reputable websites where you can post a project to get the work done. But, be careful if taking this road. Make sure you do your research. Take a good look around before you take the plunge to hire someone to create a photography site that highlights you and your creativity. Here are five key ideas to help you build that photo website.

Build a Reputation as a Freelance Photographer

Be open, honest, and accountable. Make it easy to find your credentials on an about me page of you photographers website and present a portfolio of your very best work. This is something that will make or break your business. Remember, this is your big opportunity to hook in your visitors so you want your best work up on your website. Proofread all your text to eliminate spelling and grammar mistakes, and if you are going to use graphics make sure they are excellent. Try and use original graphics and photos. There are plenty of places online where you can commission a graphic for as low as $20.

Photography Websites should be Easy to Use

Keep it simple stupid (the KISS theory) – no, I am not trying to insult you. It is something I tell myself every single day, especially when working on creative projects. Make your photography website easy for your visitors to use. There is nothing worse than clicking the back button to go to another page. It needs to be easy to navigate. And try not to go down the well travelled road of white text on a black background that almost everyone uses.

Show your imagination and creativity and come up with a color combination. I usually try not to use more than three colors but I do use shades of the colors I pick. Keep your layout clean and uncluttered. And, when you setup your galleries group your photos together in similar size thumbnails to balance your page. Nothing looks worse than thumbnails disorganized all over a page. And for goodness sake optimize your photos for your visitors to download. How frustrating is it trying to download a big file.

Search online for free tools that will strip the pixels out for the web. Instead of uploading a 100 kb file it will bring it down to around 6 or 7 kb, and keep the photo the same physical size, and still looks good on the web. The added bonus to this is that it makes your photos useless to anyone who wants to steal them except for use on the web. Chances are you will stumble across them anyway. If you’d rather not build your own website, there are sites you can use that can do the job for you…

Promote your Professional Photography Website

The whole point of creating a photography website is to be visible all over the world. So, promote your photography – get it out there once your photography website is up and running. Make sure you keyword optimize it for the search engines to find. But, there are a lot of other things you can do. Even write articles for one of the many article sites that will give you links back to your photographers website. Your photography website is a reflection of you and your services – always keep that in mind when designing a website for your business. Yes ‘ I know ‘ it all takes time but look at it as an investment in your future.

If you are familiar with Photoshop you may all ready know the basic functions of the tool palette items and some of the other commands. If you are just beginning to use the software package and want to use it simply to clean up or lightly alter your own photographs there are a few basic functions that you should take the time to learn and explore.

Brightness

Even a severely underexposed photograph can be salvaged when it is adjusted in the Photoshop program. Most cameras are set to record their photographs in the JPG format, but if you don’t mind a bit of a longer wait between photographs, setting the record format in RAW will allow complete control of your photographic final results. Photoshop software really loves to work with RAW images as opposed to the JPG and this is the main reason to save them in that format.

If your image is underexposed simply open it in your Photoshop software, from the menu tab select Image, then Adjust, and finally Brightness-Contrast where a slider feature will allow you to manually adjust the images. Unfortunately this may affect the overall quality of the image, and the contrast feature can then be adjusted to compensate. This is modified in the same manner as the brightness.

Midtones

Photoshop also allows a photographer to access and adjust midtone variations of color. Because the files are saved in RGB formats and adjustment to midtones is available in those ranges as well as in a lighten or darken mode. A user simply selects Enhance from the top menu bar, then Adjust Color, and selects the Midtones option on the dialogue screen. The image is previewed throughout the adjustment selection period.

From Color to Black and White

Though Photoshop does allow a photo to be changed from color to black and white by utilizing the Image/Mode/Grayscale command sequence the end result is usually a flat image where white and gray objects are the same shade. A much better result can be had by using the Channel Mixer. Simply open the Layers window, and then select the Channel Mixer. This feature allows the user to apply various filters to impact red, blue and green colorations in the image. For example adding a blue filter to a bright outdoor scene makes the blue sky even brighter. Each image is different, but using the Channel Mixer to create a black and white picture will allow contrast and depth to remain in the image where a grayscale conversion would remove it completely.

What is HDR?

HDR in its simplest understanding means that the camera records more details in shadows as well as in high light. It also means that traditional image storage, currently JPEG or GIF files do not offer enough range for an HDR image. These images are truly rich in color and depth. The current 8-bit technology is being expanded to 16-bit to allow for the increased intensities of HDR photographs.

How Can You Create HDR Images?

Software applications are all ready creating high dynamic range tools, but the entire computer industry has not yet caught up with portions of HDR technology, for example Photoshop software, one of the most commonly used photo-editing programs, has an HDR tool, but it will only reveal the range of colors that a computer monitor can recognize. Also, HDR color mapping deletes the 0-255 color range that most computer users and digital photographers are used to. There are also software programs that you can utilize in conjunction with each other to create these amazing photos, such as Photomatrix and Photoshop.

However, in order for these software programs to work properly, you have to start with a few different photos of the image. You will need three to five photos of different exposures of the exact same object. These exposures are going to be set on each end of the histogram, with one being too dark, one being just right and another being too bright. When they are combined in the software, the end result is an amazing photo that combines the different attributes of each shot.

How the Industry is Improving for HDR Photo Creations

Instead, the HDR color mapping increases the numerical values into the millions. Photographers and artists will need to be re-educated about tonal values and where those color values will be located on this newer and incredibly immense scale. The last editorial issue involves the computer processes of editing such high-range images – channels are increased by four – an 8mb image becomes 32mb, handling such enormous file sizes will bring many computers to a grinding halt. The industry is already in the process of retooling to meet the increasing needs of photographers, both professional and amateur.

Professionals and consumers alike may ask if this technology is worth the trouble and expense, but true photographic reproduction of an image or scene is much more possible with HDR photography. Images will seem more life like and strikingly sharp and clear. Within the coming decade HDR will enter the consumer market, whether it is recognized as a separate new technology or marketed manufacturers under their own names and labels, it will revolutionize photography and how photos are taken, edited, stored and displayed. Zoom lenses, unlike our eyes, allow the camera to have a variable focal length. This can allow your image to appear to have been taken closer to the subject than you actually were. Most often, this is handy for photographing natural subjects. Those shots of wildlife such as herons taking off from a pond or tigers lounging on the savanna are taken from a far distance away, with the camera magnifying the image. Likewise, you can get a close-up image of an approaching tornado, without actually getting up close and personal with it!

One can’t expect too much image quality under these circumstances. Particularly with digital cameras with telephoto and zoom lenses, some image quality will be sacrificed. This is because digital telephoto zoom lenses have to be made with that physical material we call glass, and it’s that much harder to engineer a lens that’s small, light, able to pull in the magnification, and still get good detail. Even with non-digital cameras, the camera lens sharpness will be lower with a 60-180 zoom lens than it would be with even a cheap prime lens. If you’ve used camera lenses in macro photography, you’ve noticed the difference when you blew the final image up to scale.

There are plenty of zoom lens tutorials online, so I won’t repeat them here. My purpose is to just give you a good feel for the territory, rather than directly answering questions like “How do camera lenses work?”. Lugging those various lenses through the field will be great exercise, as will handling them with the delicacy of a Faberge egg to make sure they don’t get damaged. There’s nothing quite like traveling on assignment only to open your luggage and discover a case full of broken lenses thanks to bellhops and taxi drivers who treat delicate photography equipment like Hulk Hogan giving somebody a body slam.

The best place to try out your new zoom lens is under studio conditions. Here, you can keep the camera perfectly still, the lens free of dust, and your subject set in ideal conditions. You’ll be pretty much limited to macro photography here, unless you’re looking to capture the paint on the studio wall magnified until it looks like the surface of Venus. But here you will have time to go over your camera lens zoom conversion tables and compare them with your results, so you get a good feel for what level of zoom will compensate for what amount of distance. Taking an action shot at a sporting event while your lens’ motorized zoom is adjusting will not be the time to practice.

On a final note, remember that all those variables in photography is what makes it challenging as a hobby or field of endeavor. Luck is a factor. Make luck work for you by taking lots of shots, trying to make each one perfect. When you see your results, you will hopefully have one that’s close to perfect.

The Gimp – If you ask for an alternative to Photoshop, this is most commonly the answer you’ll get. This is misleading, because the Gimp was never intended to compete with Photoshop, and in fact the development team frankly says on their home page that they’re sick and tired of being compared to Photoshop. “Gimp” stands for “GNU Image Manipulation Program” and it is a general-purpose graphics software package. Being a member of the GNU software application family, it is licensed to the general public and is not only free to download, but free to modify and redistribute as well. In capable hands, Gimp is an exceptional tool; a master user can match everything Photoshop can do down to the last pixel and do more besides. But its interface is very different from Photoshop, and its plugins do similar things under different names and methods. In short, do not come to the Gimp expecting a Photoshop clone, because you will be disappointed and deservedly so. That would be like if you moved to China and expected them to speak English, watch football, and eat hamburgers. There is a huge degree of animosity between Adobe and GNU over this, perhaps the biggest rift in all of computing, so tread lightly when discussing it online. It is so popular now that you can even find extremely helpful guides to show you how to use it expertly in a short period. CinePaint – You’ll be surprised to learn that Hollywood movie studios do not use Photoshop – at all! They instead use CinePaint. CinePaint is a free open-source program which is not only used by movie production studios, but is partly developed by them as well. The tool is of course very sophisticated, and started out as a fork from the Gimp project, but has since gone its own way. The interface on it will seem quite outdated, however. This program takes a learning curve.

Corel Photo-Paint - Corel was once the leader in graphics editing software, before Adobe even came along. Photo-Paint, as its name suggests, is indeed intended to be a competitor to Photoshop. It sees much use in the freelance artist field and small businesses. It is also substantially cheaper that Photoshop. It can even use Photoshop plug-ins. Its interface is also different from Photoshop’s, but many users find it easier to learn.

Pixel – The Pixel image editor is a small commercial package which is produced by a lone Slovakian programmer. It is amazingly cheap, and is the commercial program most closely compared to Photoshop. The developer may be a prodigy, because this program is portable to virtually any platform and runs very light on resources, yet accomplishes most of the same effects. however, it reflects the singular vision of a lone producer, and so there isn’t a lot of room for expansion. For a freelance or home user, it might be just the perfect fit.

Picasa – Acquired recently by our friends at Google, Picasa is a commercial freeware application which is more of an album manager with some image-editing capabilities. However, for basic tasks it is very smooth to learn and use, and is free to download and use and runs almost anywhere. It does have some filter effects and simple functions for image manipulation. This is largely targeted at the non-professional home user.

Paint.NET – This is an open-source drop-in replacement for Microsoft Windows Paint. However, it has capabilities above and beyond standard platform image software. It is actually more comparable to the Gimp that anything else, but its interface is a little easier to learn and use. Paint.NET has a large feature set and is powerful enough for daily photography use, but has not seen a great deal of uptake amongst the professional sector just yet.
